"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." ~ Philippians 4:6-7
Through prayer, we can lay our cares, concerns, and gratitude before the Lord. We can express our hearts to Him. And we can also express our trust by recognizing the many ways He can and does meet our deepest needs.
There are many names for God, and each one touches on a different aspect of God's character and a different way He relates to us. Following are some names and sample prayers from Praying Through the Names of God by Tony Evans to inspire your own talks with our ever-near heavenly Father.
El Bethel—"The God of the House of God"
El Bethel, abide in me. Set up your home in the depths of my soul. Let your words dwell in me that I may know and live by them and for you. Reveal to me the sin I must confess and turn from so that I may be pure and blameless in your sight. Show me how to best honor you through this temple you have set up within me. Guide me in my eating habits, in my entertainment choices, and even in what I wear so that as your house—bethel—I may glorify you in all I do. Grant me the discernment to know how to reflect you well.
Eli Maelekhi—"God My King"
Eli Maelekhi, I ask for your pardon and forgiveness for not always giving you the honor due to you as King. Please forgive me for the many times I’ve pressed my own agenda rather than advancing your kingdom agenda. Grant me mercy, Eli Maelekhi, for seeking to reign where you should rightly reign and for turning to my own ways rather than to yours. Forgive me for not using your Word as a guide in every decision I make.
Jehovah Gibbor Milchamah—"The Lord Mighty in Battle"
Jehovah Gibbor Milchamah, thank you for being mighty in battle and for being faithful to send forth your burning anger against unrighteousness when your people rise up and call on your name in humility. I need not fear anyone or anything when the greatest of warriors guides me, and I give you thanks for revealing this truth to me today.
